Barranquilla background
Barranquilla is one of 3 popular Colombian Caribbean Cities you can visit.
Cartagena is to the West of Barranquilla and Santa Marta is to the East.
Both cities are 2 hours away by bus, so if you want to visit them, they are close enough for a day trip.
Barranquilla is located on the Magdalena River and was the first port in Colombia. In addition to being the first port in Colombia, Barranquilla is also home to the first airport in South America and home to Avianca, South Americas first airline.
Being a port city, Barranquilla is home to many immigrants from all over the world. The population of Barranquilla is mix of the indigenous population, the Spanish, African and the large influx of cultures during World War I and II. Due to the mixing of these cultures, the people of Barranquilla can vary from brown skin and light eyes to white skin and black hair. The Pop Singer Shakira who is half Colombian and half Lebanese is a perfect example of the ethnic diversity you will find in Barranquilla. In-addition to Shakira, Barranquilla is also the home town for the baseball player Edgar Renteria, and Hollywood actress Sofia Vergara.
The people of Barranquilla referred to as Costenas and they have the reputation of being some of the nicest in Colombia!
Flying to Barranquilla
Being a major Colombian City, Barranquilla has many direct flights from Miami. Barranquilla is conveniently located to North America and is only a 2 hour flight from Miami. During the busier seasons, American Airlines has daily flights from Miami to the Barranquilla Ernesto Cortizzos International Airport. If you choose to fly into another Colombian city, there are regional airlines connecting all of the major cities.

El Carnaval de Barranquilla
Being a coastal city, the most popular activities in Barranquilla are Beach parties and Beach activities. But Barranquilla is best known for its Carnival (El Carnaval de Barranquilla). This is the most famous Carnival in Colombia and is the largest in South America, after the carnival in Rio. The Barranquilla Carnival has been proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the 28 "Masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of Humanity". The carnival is held 4 days before Ash Wednesday to 4 days afterwards. The carnival festivities are held in the city streets, but don’t worry, due to Barranquilla's warn weather, you won’t need a sweater! The Carnival is extremely popular, so make your reservations early!
