Background information on Santa Marta

Santa Marta is located on the Colombian Caribbean coast 2 hours east of Barranquilla. Founded on July 29, 1525 Santa Marta was the first city in Colombia and the second city to be founded in South America (Cumaná Venezuela was founded in1521). Santa Marta is an important maritime port and a popular tourist destination for both Americans (a popular Miami Cruise Ship Destination) and Colombians.

Climate in Santa Marta

Being on the Caribbean Coast, the temperatures in Santa Marta ranges from 70 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit. The months of November and December offer some of the most pleasant weather, but this also coincides with the popular tourism season.

The Beach at El Rodadero

El Rodadero is a popular beach community west of Santa Marta which offers a more laid back, beach environment.

Tayrona National Park

The Tayrona National Natural Park (Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona) is 34 km north of Santa Marta. The park covers some 30 square kilometers of maritime area in the Caribbean sea and some 150 km² of land. Daily Snorkeling and Scuba trips to Tayrona Park are available from Santa Marta and El Rodadero.
